Overwatch Beginner's Guide
New to Overwatch or coming back in 2026? How matches work, how to pick a role and hero, which modes to play first and how Competitive works in Season 5.

Overwatch is a free-to-play team shooter from Blizzard. In 2026 it dropped the "2" from its name and started Reign of Talon, a year-long story told across six seasons. We're now in Season 5: A Grim Doctrine (from October 6, 2026), with 54 heroes to choose from.
Step 1: Learn the basics
Step 2: Pick a role, then a hero
Start by choosing the role that sounds fun – read our roles guide. Then try two or three heroes in that role. Easy first picks:
- Tank: Reinhardt, Orisa or D.Va
- Damage: Soldier: 76 or Cassidy
- Support: Mercy or Lúcio
Each hero also has a sub-role (for example Flanker or Medic) with a small passive bonus. The full roster is on our heroes page.
Step 3: Where to play first
Step 4: Competitive
Once you've played enough to unlock it, Competitive puts you in ranks from Bronze to Champion. Season 4 added a new Emerald rank between Platinum and Diamond. Don't rush it – learning a few heroes and maps in Quick Play first makes ranked much more fun.
Step 5: Stay up to date
Overwatch changes every season with new heroes, reworks and balance patches – the October 2026 patch moved Sombra to Support and reworked Roadhog. Our latest patch breakdown explains what changed.
