Dota 2 is Valve's free-to-play MOBA on PC, Mac and Linux. Every one of its 127 heroes is free, and there's nothing to unlock that gives an advantage. It has a steep learning curve, so this guide sticks to the essentials a new player needs in late 2026 (patch 7.41f).

Step 1: Understand a match

5 vs 5Two teams – the Radiant and the Dire – each with five heroes.
Destroy the AncientEach base has a big building called the Ancient. Destroy the enemy's to win.
Three lanesWaves of creeps march down the safe lane, mid lane and offlane, with towers guarding each one.
Gold and levelsLand the killing blow on creeps (last-hitting) for gold, buy items and level up to 30.

Step 2: Learn the five positions

Each player takes a position from 1 (carry, most gold) to 5 (hard support, least gold). Read what they mean on our Attributes & Roles page.

Step 3: Pick your first heroes

Start as a supportPosition 5 has the fewest mechanics to worry about. Try Crystal Maiden, Ogre Magi or Lich.
Easy heroesWraith King, Sniper, Axe and Dragon Knight are rated Easy by Valve.
Play TurboTurbo is a faster All Pick mode with more gold and XP – good for short sessions and learning heroes.
Use the guides in-gamePick a hero guide in the shop to get suggested items and skill builds while you learn.

Step 4: Know the big objectives

RoshanA huge neutral boss in the river. Killing him drops the Aegis, which brings a hero back to life once.
TormentorsFloating cubes that first appear at 20:00. Beat one to give a teammate a free Aghanim's Shard.
RunesPower runes in the river give short buffs, Bounty runes give gold and Wisdom shrines give experience.
Twin GatesPortals in two corners of the map that let you travel across it.

Step 5: Work towards ranked

Unlocking rankedYou need a linked phone number and about 100 hours played before ranked matchmaking opens.
The eight medalsHerald, Guardian, Crusader, Archon, Legend, Ancient, Divine and Immortal. All but Immortal have five stars.
Behaviour mattersBe friendly and don't abandon games – reports and abandons hurt your matchmaking.
