Counter-Strike 2 Beginner's Guide

New to CS2? How a match works, how money and buying work, which modes to start with and how to get into Premier.

Counter-Strike 2 is Valve's free-to-play tactical shooter on PC, and the successor to CS:GO. It's simple to understand and very hard to master: one team plants a bomb, the other stops them, and a single headshot can decide a round. This guide covers what a new player needs in late 2026 (Premier Season 5).

Step 1: Understand a match

5 vs 5Terrorists (T) against Counter-Terrorists (CT). You swap sides at halftime.
Plant or defuseTs win a round by planting the bomb and letting it explode. CTs win by defusing it or running out the clock.
One life per roundIf you die, you watch your teammates until the next round. Killing the whole enemy team also wins the round.
First to 13Premier and Competitive matches are 24 rounds (MR12). The first team to 13 wins; 12–12 goes to overtime.

Step 2: Learn how money works

At the start of every round you have a short buy phase. What you can afford depends on how the last rounds went. See every gun and price on our weapons page.

Earn money every roundYou get money for kills, planting the bomb and winning – and a smaller amount for losing.
Full buyA rifle (AK-47 for T, M4A4 or M4A1-S for CT), armor with a helmet and a few grenades.
Eco roundsWhen money is short, the whole team saves so everyone can afford a full buy next round.
Buy togetherOne player with a rifle and four with pistols usually loses. Match your team's buy.

Step 3: Play the right modes first

Casual & DeathmatchNo rank pressure. Deathmatch is the best way to warm up your aim.
Retakes & RushShort, fast modes: Retakes drops you into a 4v3 after the bomb is planted, and Rush (September 2026) is a 3v3 race through random arenas.
Wingman2v2 on small maps – a good way to learn bomb sites.
Competitive & PremierThe ranked modes. Both need Prime Status.

Step 4: Learn the maps

The seven Active Duty maps right now are Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage and Nuke. All of them are on our maps page.

Habits that help

Crosshair at head heightKeep your aim where heads will appear, and stop moving before you shoot – CS rewards standing still.
Learn two maps firstStart with Dust II and Mirage. Map guides in Competitive help with your first smokes.
Throw your grenadesSmokes, flashes and fire win rounds. A grenade you die holding is wasted money.
Don't over-reloadReloading now throws away the rest of your magazine, so only reload when you need to.

When you're ready to rank up, read how Premier and the ranks work, and keep up with the latest update notes.
