How to Unlock and Beat Gogmazios in Monster Hunter Wilds
Gogmazios is locked behind HR 100 and two extra missions. Here's the full unlock path, how the three-phase siege works and how to farm it for Gogma Artian weapons.

Gogmazios is the biggest fight in Monster Hunter Wilds right now. The oil-soaked Elder Dragon arrived with Title Update 4 in December 2025, and its parts are the only way to turn Artian weapons into Gogma Artian weapons, a major upgrade path for endgame builds. Gogmazios also ships in the Switch 2 version on December 4, so a lot of new hunters will be chasing it soon.
You won't stumble into this fight by accident. It's locked behind a Hunter Rank requirement and two extra story missions. This guide covers the full unlock path, how the three-phase siege works, and how to fight it again once the story is done. It's correct for the current version, 1.042.00.03 (October 27, 2026).
Requirements
| Story progress | Clear the main mission "A First Cry" |
| Hunter Rank | HR 100 or higher |
| Extra mission 1 | An Ancient Resting Place (from Olivia in the Oilwell Basin) |
| Extra mission 2 | Ghosts Pay No Heed to Tomorrow (9★ Assignment) |
| Arena | Forgotten Machineworks, deep beneath the Oilwell Basin |
| Best elements | Fire first, then Dragon |
If you've finished the main story but aren't at HR 100 yet, keep running High Rank hunts and Optional Quests until you get there. The extra missions won't show up before then.
Step 1: An Ancient Resting Place
- Make sure you've cleared "A First Cry" and reached HR 100.
- Travel to the base camp in the Oilwell Basin and talk to Olivia. This starts the extra mission An Ancient Resting Place.
- Follow Olivia on your Seikret into a newly discovered space beneath Azuz.
- Investigate the points of interest along the way. They set up the story behind Gogmazios.
- Talk to Gemma to wrap up the mission.
There's no fight in this one. You'll get Dust of Life x5 and a Heavy Armor Sphere as rewards.
Step 2: Ghosts Pay No Heed to Tomorrow
- Talk to Werner at the Pit Elevator to start Ghosts Pay No Heed to Tomorrow.
- Optional but useful: talk to Quinn, Griffin and Moonhaze. Their lines explain Gogmazios's weaknesses and its three states.
- Talk to Fabius when you're ready. This starts the hunt right away, so eat a meal and check your loadout first.
- Slay Gogmazios in the Forgotten Machineworks. Fabius and Nadia join the fight.
- Afterwards, return to Werner at the top of the Pit Elevator to complete the mission.
Beat it once and Gogmazios is permanently unlocked for repeat hunts (see "Fighting it again" below).
How the fight works
Gogmazios is a siege-style hunt for up to eight hunters: four players plus four Support Hunters. It's long and has three distinct phases. Gogmazios also switches between oily states, and those decide which element works.
Fire first, then Dragon
- In its solid state, oil hardens over its body and resists Dragon. Use Fire to soften the oil and push it into a liquid state.
- Once it's liquid (and later gaseous), its hide is exposed and Dragon damage hits hard.
Bring a Fire weapon and a Dragon weapon and swap between them.
Phase 1: the forge arena
Gogmazios mixes physical swipes from its wingarms, head and tail with oil breath that coats the ground. Oil pools slow you down, so don't fight in them. The arena has hazards you can drop on it, including hanging scrap metal and a forge. Hit the head and wingarms.
Phase 2: lava and the Elderbreaker
After enough damage, its burning oil beam floods the lower area with abyssal lava. Climb to the raised area on your Seikret and keep fighting from there.
- Attack the wingarms to make it topple, then go for its back.
- Break the back twice and the Convergent Elderbreaker, a huge weapon fused to its body, falls off.
- Connect the three Loose Nexuses around the arena to charge the Elderbreaker. Gogmazios will target players carrying the wires, so the rest of the group should keep it busy.
- Fire the Elderbreaker for massive damage and a knockdown. The longer it charges, the harder it hits.
Phase 3: the gaseous state and the ultimate attack
At a set health threshold, Gogmazios turns gaseous and takes to the air at the top of the area.
- In its liquid state, Compact Anti-Wyvern Guns come loose from its body. Grab them with your Claw Slinger to use as Slinger ammo. There's no limit on how many you can take.
- Shoot it while it's flying to bring it down, then pile on Dragon damage. There are also pillars in the arena you can drop on it.
- Watch for its ultimate attack. When it lands and the ground erupts, it's very vulnerable to Dragon, so pour Dragon damage in. Doing that weakens the attack (up to twice). If you've weakened it at least once, Fabius shields a safe zone you can shelter in. High ground also protects you, but the first use destroys all of it.
Fighting it again
Once Ghosts Pay No Heed to Tomorrow is done, you have two ways to fight Gogmazios again:
| Quest | Rank | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Specter of Their Sins | 9★ Event Quest | The standard repeat hunt |
| Special Assignment: Slay Gogmazios | 10★ Event Quest | Harder version; 50-minute limit, fails after 3 faints |
Older guides say Gogmazios can only be fought online. That's no longer true: since Ver. 1.042.00.00 (August 2026), Capcom has made all 25 available event and Challenge Quests playable offline, and the official notes name Special Assignment: Slay Gogmazios as one of them.
What you're farming for
- Mutated Armaments come from breaking the weapon fragments on its body. You use them to upgrade Artian weapons into Gogma Artian weapons, which can then be reinforced further at the Smithy.
- Its regular materials build the Gogmazios α and β armor sets.
- The 10★ Special Assignment also rewards a Battle-tempered Emblem and a Timeworn Charm.
Common mistakes
- Rushing Fabius. Talking to him launches the hunt immediately. Prepare first.
- Only bringing Dragon. It bounces off the solid oil state. A Fire set speeds up the early phases.
- Ignoring the Elderbreaker. One full-charge shot is worth minutes of regular damage. Assign someone to the Nexus wires.
- Hoarding slinger ammo. Grab Anti-Wyvern Guns whenever they drop. You need them to keep it grounded in phase 3.
- Not damaging the ultimate. Standing back and hoping to dodge is the most common way to cart. Dragon damage during the setup is what makes it survivable.
