How to Get Scrap Fast in Rust: Best Components to Recycle, Crates, Monuments and Safe Zones
Scrap no longer buys tech-tree unlocks, but you still need lots of it for workbenches and research. Here's how to farm it quickly in the current Rust update.

Scrap used to be the only thing that mattered in Rust progression. Since the Printed and Polished update (the November forced wipe, live since November 5, 2026), tech-tree unlocks cost blueprint items instead. That doesn't make scrap less important, though. Workbenches still cost scrap, and research got more expensive. If you want a Tier 3 bench and a few researched guns in the first days of a wipe, you still need thousands of it.
This guide covers the fastest ways to earn scrap right now, including the recycler changes from August's Power Trip update that many players still haven't noticed.
Quick answer
| What | Scrap |
|---|---|
| Loot barrel | 2 |
| Brown crate or tool box | 5 |
| Military crate | 8 |
| Elite crate | 25 |
| Rifle Body (monument recycler) | 25 |
| Tech Trash or Electric Fuse (monument recycler) | 20 |
| Gears or Metal Spring (monument recycler) | 10 |
The fastest loop: loot everything along a road, keep every component, and recycle at a monument instead of a safe zone.
What you need scrap for now
After the November update, scrap is spent in two places:
| Use | Scrap cost |
|---|---|
| Workbench Level 1 / 2 / 3 | 50 / 500 / 1,250 |
| Research (common / uncommon / rare / very rare) | 20 / 40 / 100 / 300 |
Each bench also needs its usual building materials. Research costs went up in this update (they were 15, 30, 60 and 120), so researching a very rare item now takes 300 scrap. Tech-tree nodes cost one Blueprint Fragment, Page or Book each instead. Our separate guide to blueprint fragments, pages and books covers how to get those.
Requirements
- Something to carry loot in. Early on, your inventory fills up fast with components, so a small stash or a horse helps.
- Access to a recycler. Every safe zone and many monuments have one.
- For monuments: basic weapons, meds, and the right keycard or fuse for puzzle rooms, plus a hazmat suit for radiated areas.
Step-by-step: the fastest scrap loop
Run a road. Roads are lined with barrels and crates, and every one of them drops scrap directly. Barrels give 2, brown crates and tool boxes give 5. More important are the components that come with them.
Keep every component. Don't craft with gears, springs or pipes on day one. Recycling them is where the real scrap comes from. A single Rifle Body is worth more than a dozen barrels.
Pick the right recycler. Recyclers aren't equal anymore:
- Safe zones (Outpost and Bandit Camp): 40% efficiency and 8 seconds per item. Safe, but slow and stingy.
- Green recyclers at monuments: 50% by default since the Power Trip update, rising to 60% once the island's power grid is restored with Heavy Fuses at the Power Plant.
- Red recycler at the Power Plant: 75%, but only when the grid is at maximum power.
Recycling a full load at a monument instead of a safe zone gives you 25% more scrap.
Move up to monument crates. Once you have a gun and some meds, clear monuments for military crates (8 scrap each) and elite crates (25 each). Monuments also have the most components, so you'll come out with far more scrap after recycling than the crates show.
Recycle on the spot when it's safe. Most monuments have their own recycler. If nobody's around, recycling right there saves a trip and the better rate pays off.
Hunt for Tech Trash. It recycles into 20 scrap at a monument. You also get Tech Trash from recycling CCTV Cameras and Targeting Computers, so don't throw those away if you can't use them.
Spend it in the right order. Get your Level 1 bench (50) and Research Table, then save for Level 2 (500). Don't research everything you find. At 100 to 300 scrap per rare item, research only what you'll actually use.
Best components to recycle
| Component | Safe zone (40%) | Monument (50%) |
|---|---|---|
| Rifle Body | 20 | 25 |
| Tech Trash | 16 | 20 |
| Electric Fuse | 16 | 20 |
| SMG Body / Semi Auto Body | 12 | 15 |
| Gears | 8 | 10 |
| Metal Spring | 8 | 10 |
| Sheet Metal | about 6 | 8 |
| Metal Pipe / Road Signs | 4 | 5 |
Values are for items in full condition. Damaged components give less.
Other scrap sources worth knowing
- Scientists sometimes drop a handful of scrap along with their gear.
- Fishing: fish can be sold for scrap at a vending machine in a fishing village. It's slow but very low risk, which makes it a good option for solo players.
- Locked crates, airdrops and oil rigs can drop large scrap stacks, but they're contested and the scrap isn't guaranteed.
- Bandit Camp gambling: the wheel can multiply your scrap, but the house wins over time. Treat it as entertainment, not a farming method.
Tips
- Don't spend scrap on tech-tree unlocks. You can't anymore. Save every piece for benches and research.
- Check the grid. If the island's grid has been powered up, green recyclers run at 60%, and at maximum power they also work a little faster. That's a good time to dump your component stash.
- Combine trips. Barrels and crates now also drop Blueprint Fragments, so a road run gives you scrap, components and fragments at the same time.
- Prioritize Level 2. The jump to Workbench Level 2 opens up much better gear, so make 500 scrap your first real goal.
Common mistakes
- Recycling everything at Outpost. It's tempting because it's safe, but at 40% you lose a fifth of what a monument recycler would give.
- Crafting with valuable components. Using Rifle Bodies or Tech Trash for early crafts throws away a lot of scrap.
- Researching junk. With rare research at 100 scrap and very rare at 300, researching something you won't use can cost you your Level 2 bench.
- Relying on scrap from barrels alone. Two scrap per barrel adds up slowly. The components inside are worth much more.
- Following old guides. Many guides still treat scrap as tech-tree currency and list recycler rates from before August. Both have changed.
